Each character should have their own rank so that people can improve and compete fairly on different characters
Really cool idea! I think that it would be cool to have either character ranks and also a global rank for your overall performance.
This might be tricky for something like ranked. Some people are very good at counter-picking characters and they might do so in the middle of a set in order to win. That’s part of their skillset as a player.
Could be exploited though so that if someone finds a good player they can just sandbag to not have to lose their rank

For those that don’t understand how this could work, just look at smashladder’s ranking system. Anther could implement this easily. Each slot has its separate rank. You can have secondaries on your main slot, but if you play your secondaries past a certain %, then they’re not allowed to have their own slot. Also, you can’t constantly create slots (or you’d have top players sending everyone to bronze ranks by doing 100 placement games with different slots). You can earn the right to create a new slot by playing ~10-30 games on your first (or previous) slot. And so forth for each subsequent slot. Anther has a lot of experience with dealing with successful ranking systems from a lot of troubleshooting it on smashladder.
Also, you can’t change slot between game 1 and game 2 of a Best of 3 set, of course.
A good compromise would be to have overall rank be public and character rank be private for player only. Ladder would only consider overall performance but you get to see which are your most successful characters and their relative prowess amongst each other.
Nah it isn’t such a good compromise imo because if you play with a character you’re bad with (and you want to learn that character for example), you shouldn’t get paired up with ppl who play their main and would just basically destroy you and farm your rank. If we would have a private character rank, ladder should still consider that character’s performance.
Don’t compromise. Just do this for unranked only. Counter picking is part of ranked, so that uses global MMR. But in unranked you can practice secondaries without getting insta-bodied if you’re way better with your main. That’s all I think OP was suggesting
