Check to see if people are using wired or WIFI#131

I think there should be a feature where when people open up Melee, the game automatically detects whether or not someone is using ethernet or WIFI. If the person is using WIFI, then they are not allowed to play until they get ethernet. Once they get ethernet and the game detects this, they will be allowed to play or log in.

Or only play with other WiFi people. They get a separate queue.

I get why this feature is popular, but I think we should avoid features that split the matchmaking into multiple queues and could make wait times longer. Maybe just having friendlist and ability to blacklist people that you have laggy connection with is enough and probably easier to implement.

This doesn’t seem like a very inclusive idea. There are many people with wifi that can play games online at low ping. I think it would make more sense if the matchmaker has a setting that allowed you to choose minimum ping. So that people can only play with other people below a certain ping. This would completely fix the issue of playing with players who have “bad wifi””

Skullgirls has a detector for if someone is using wifi, more specifically I think it just checks to see if someone is having bad jitter and packet loss and gives an indictator the user is on Wifi. It doesnt block the person from matchmaking, just lets the opponent decide for themselves if they want to quit or not.

The whole advantage of slippi online is that even WiFi people can play against others regionally with minimal lag.

@Poudycat that’s not entirely true, you should avoid wifi if you can

i play on wifi all the time and it works well, you just need a good wifi card. This would make me sad, i usually have 40 ping and i pull 300mbps download speeds. So now i am no longer eligible to play half of the crowd? also i have used ethernet on a shitty wifi such as 10 mbps and lagged a ton. It’s more about having a good setup than just wether its ethernet or not

I’m using Ethernet cable and I think this is a horrible idea. I usually have no problems whatsoever when playing people randomly on unranked, and I bet several of them do have Wifi. Also keep in mind that there are people who simply have no choice but to use Wifi.

I for one would hate it if I couldn’t meet some players just because they have another kind of connection. If they are lagging or having problems there are probably several reasons to this other than the fact that they are using wifi.

I think this is a fantastic idea. Recently I’ve been getting a ton of packet loss on ranked and my guess would be WiFi on the opponents end as the culprit. Does slippi have stats for packet loss?

ya this idea is great id like to see the community be split even more over trivial shit that can be solved by just quitting out the games i dont want to play. id like to see wifi users burn in hell for the sins they’ve committed as this game is made specifically for the elite, the better, the wired.

Yeah because screw all those people who don’t have the ability to get an ethernet connection right?

I think similar to Japnoo, there should be a maximum tolerable ping setting implimented somehow for unranked

For ranked something like this needs to be implemented, i couldnt stand the idea of losing rank because of some wifi warrior who thinks its fine to play with lag spikes and sudden ping jumps
